Why does 3rd gear grind at high rpm after my clutch swap?
The short answer
- A clutch that isn't fully releasing causes exactly this: the gearbox never fully disengages, so 3rd's synchro gets chewed at high rpm.
- Bleed the clutch line and check pedal free play before you pull the transmission.
- If 3rd is the only gear that grinds, the next suspects are a worn synchro or a bent shift fork.
Almost always a release problem, not a gearbox failure: after a clutch job, air left in the line or a pedal that isn't returning fully keeps the disc dragging, so 3rd gear takes the hit at high rpm.
Check the release first
Most threads land on the same cause: after a clutch job, the release system is what changed, not the gears.
- Bleed the clutch line properly. Two or three pumps is not enough on these cars — run a full bottle through and watch for bubbles at the bleeder.
- Measure pedal free play. A pedal that sits low isn't pushing enough fluid, so the clutch never fully releases.
- Re-check the throwout bearing seating. A bearing that isn't clipped onto the fork still works at low rpm and fails under load.
If it still grinds
Grinding that happens only in 3rd, and only above 5,000 rpm, is a synchro problem — the clutch exposed it rather than caused it. Cold-only grinding usually points at gear oil that's too thin or too old.

23rd gear grind after clutch replacement — solved
Turned out to be air in the line. Bled it twice more and the grind was gone. Do not skip the bleeder on the slave.
High rpm 3rd gear grind, clutch was fine
Pulled the box and found a worn 3rd gear synchro. Same symptoms: smooth below 4k, grinding at redline.
